1st Annual Austin Idiotarod

The new date is set!
Saturday February 16th
Final Update!!! Wednesday February 13th
Alright, raceday is almost upon us. We'll be meeting at the warehouse at 1023 Springdale Rd. Teams can start gathering at 2pm with the race starting at 3:30. Be prepared for any weather as the event will go on regardless of rain, cold, or blazing heat. There will be an awards party following the race so feel free to bring food or drinks.
Update Saturday January 26th
Sorry I didn't get this update here before now, had a few setbacks this week. The new date for the Idiotarod has been set! Saturday February 16th. That means there are 3 weeks for you to get your teams together. You don't have to do anything extravagant (although I'm not discouraging that), just do something. The point is to have fun. So get yer teammates together, grab a cart, and set aside February 16th to come join us for the fun!
Update Thursday January 17th
Ok, planning for the new date has started. I'm hoping it will be the end of February but I still have to coordinate it with other events going on around this time. So as soon as I know the schedule of said events I will be able to confirm the new date for the race. Because the end of February will come up faster than it seems, I will do all I can to have the new date announced on Monday so teams can start getting everything together. But, you know, don't wait for me. Get a head start on that team planning stuff now.
Update Wednesday January 9th
I regret having to announce this, but I am going to have to postpone the Idiotarod. I know how close it is to the date, but I have no other choice. I will have the new date picked in a day or two and will announce it here. I am sorry to those of you who are looking forward to this and getting teams ready. The event will still be happening, it will just be at a slightly later date. Sorry for the inconvenience to everyone.
Update Friday January 4th
So it's getting down to the wire for the Idiotarod. The problem is I only have one team registered and I still have tons of things to get prepared. I must have help with this. So if you'd like to see this event happen, now is the time to speak up!
Here's what I need:
More teams registered. I mean, how is it a race without racers? It doesn't take much. Just gather some friends, get a shopping cart, throw on some costumes, and come join the party! The course will not be long or hard, it's meant to be fun and easy. (Note: I changed the team size to 3-7 people)
Judges. I need 2 or 3 people who do not plan to run the race who would like to be judges. The job of the judges is to decide what the challenges at the checkpoints will be, accept bribes from teams, and decide who wins what category at the end of the race.
Badass party planners. At the end of the race will be the awards party. I need some people who kick ass at putting on a good time. Really it doesn't need to be extravagant. The party will be held at the Flipside warehouse and we'll need a megaphone or small system to use a microphone with (for announcing the awards), people to bring drinks and snacks, some music, and whatever else you can think up. I don't really expect the party to last long since the race will be starting so much earlier, but I suppose it can go late if people want it to.
Award planners. There is not an entry fee for this race so there will not be cash prizes. This is all for fun. But at the moment I don't have the awards planned so I need some creative people to help me make...things. Could be trophies, could be tiaras, could be a rubber chicken. I need people who would like to have an award making/scavenging party.
If you would like to help in any way, or if you want to register a team, please email me at austinidiotarod@gmail.com.
What Is It?
The Idiotarod is a race (and I use that term loosely) inspired by the famous long distance dog sled race in Alaska. Only instead of dogs and sleds, it's people and shopping carts. Instead of Alaska, it’s Austin, Texas (which is a much more forgiving climate).
How Do I Participate?
Put a team together and come join us! Teams consist of 3-7 people: one musher and the "dogs". Team themes, costumes, and cart decorations are encouraged. Remember, this is a Leave No Trace event. Visit the Registration page to learn how to sign up a team.
If you do not have enough people for a team and would like to join one still in need of members, contact me at austinidiotarod@gmail.com.
